Purpose in Life is the specific and consistent application for a set of actions that have purpose or value for the individual, others and society. An important component for purpose in life is the reconciliation that an individual is engaged in a consistent number of activities that hold value. Purpose in life involves a commitment to the continual and consistent sets of actions in one’s life that have meaning and positive impact for the individual’s circles of influence.
The bible tells us in Psalm 139:13-16 that God “created my inmost being; He knit us together in our mother’s womb … we are fearfully and wonderfully made; His works are wonderful … All the days ordained for us were written in His book before one of them came to be.” Also, Ephesians 2:10 says “We are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” We have been made with purpose and each have a reason for living. The fact that we are breathing and living on this planet is because the Lord has prepared us in advance to do good works.
From my years hiring and developing the millennial, as well as working with college students, I have found that the process to find a career, or purpose with respect to a vocation varies by person. However, I have noticed a trend that involves focusing on these areas:
Skills & Abilities
Personality & Behavior
Passions & Desires
These various assessment tools can be used as conversation starters for you to examine yourself with regards to a particular career or vocation. I have found that focusing on these particular areas and by having continual discussion can bring about an experience of self-actualization and understanding about the various career paths and vocations that may bring you purpose.
I invite you to have willing and prayerful heart for God’s direction as you complete these assessments above. Ask Him what He has for you and how you can use your purpose in life for impact and purpose for His Kingdom.
